This one’s directed at the idea that it “confuses” kids to be exposed to things like gay couples.

Like I’ve said before, my daughter is nine.  At nine, she’s not confused by the fact that her daddy is engaged to another man.  She’s not confused that her cousin Grey was married to another man before divorcing him.  She’s not confused that one of my friends is a woman married to another woman.  She’s not confused by the fact that her cousin Evan is a boy who we used to think was a girl.  She’s not confused by her aunt who was disowned for being a girl instead of a boy; she just thinks the woman’s parents are jerks for disowning her.  She’s not confused by her cousin’s friend using different pronouns than everyone else she knows.

Why is she not confused?  I sat her down and talked to her about it.  I did some parenting and explained to her that everyone is different and it’s okay.  I explained to her that people’s happiness is more important than society’s expectations and that was all it took.  It’s not hard to make kids understand.  It just takes a little parenting.  -JFG
